It seemed to have all started with what is called "My Space." Now there are all kinds of sites used for social networking. The most popular being facebook and twitter. What about this new trend by Google? It's all the "buzz." In this age of technology we're always looking for new ways to get connected and when something new is introduced it spreads quickly with everyone trying to get in with the new trend.
Google Buzz appears to be a combination of all the other social networking tools combined, managed through your gmail account. From a users perspective here are some pros and cons to google buzz.
The pros: it will allow you to connect with many other sites including twitter and facebook to feed into the buzz, this means when you update your status somewhere else it will post it there for your buzz friends to see. You can stay connected with all of your closest friends whom you have taken time to get their email addresses without the junk from people you can barely remember who they are. It lends itself more to having actual conversation with many different people, where the other sites are usually used for short updates and occasionally individual conversations.
Some cons: how well is it actually going to catch on when we are already so used to using the other social networking sites? it would take work to start using the buzz to our advantage. With facebook making it so easy to find friends and still send messages like you would an email it takes away the need to get email addresses of your friends which is who you would want to follow and be connected with in the buzz.
Personally I have not yet found it worth my time to really utilize it other than to comment on posts of my two friends who do use it. Who knows maybe one day it really will catch on and will become something many people can't live without. Google has a way of sneaking in and taking over.

I think facebook is great, but I have a hard time with all of these new networking websites. I already waste enough time on facebook, do we really need more? I think it is a good way to connect with people, but it has been taken too far and people need to remember how to talk in public! (which is hypocritical of me to say since I am on facebook right now!)
ReplyDeleteI think Buzz had a lot of potential. Being a google thing it could have helped people bring all their facebook, myspace, and twitter junk to one place. You could search your social networks, or something. But instead, it's just like another twitter. Just another way for me to update my "status." I disabled it...
